Description of works【Ceramic ware named after FURUTA Oribe, a daimyo chajin (feudal lord who had mastered the tea ceremony)】
This Oribe ware was produced in Mino, Gifu Prefecture, in the early 17th century. It is a type called Narumi Oribe, whose body is composed of red and white clays, coated with slip, and glazed in white, green, red and the color of tetsu-e (underglaze iron). A design of pine and bamboo is in the center on a red background utilizing white slip and tetsu-e. If a plum tree were present, the design would have become sankan-sanyu (“three friends in cold weather”), but there is no plum tree.
Green Oribe glaze is generously applied to its thick, broad handle and around the rim, exhibiting the extravagant mood of the Momoyama period.
