Description of works【Gaya had a deep connection with Japan and its pottery】
This type of pottery is called toshitsu-doki, which refers to kiln-fired, unglazed pottery that is harder than earthenware. Because it is impervious, it is suitable for storing liquids for a long time. Toshitsu-doki is considered the origin of the Japanese sue ware (stoneware). This piece has several bands of clay around the mouth and wavy patterns made with combs, which are the decorative features also observed on sue ware.
Gaya was a small confederacy in ancient southern Korea, located in between Baekje and Silla. Because Gaya produced iron, it became very powerful, and had a deep connection with the Japanese archipelago.
