Description of works【Successor to the Sanage Kilns, the Seto focused on high-end products】
The Seto Kilns in northern Aichi Prefecture were one of the successors to the pottery-making techniques of the Sanage Kilns, the largest cluster of ancient kilns in Japan, located southwest of Seto. When the Sanage Kilns stopped making glazed ware, Seto took over and resumed the production of luxury glazed ware at the end of the 12th century CE.
Many of their works adopted the shapes of Chinese ceramics that were considered the best at that time. This piece was modeled after a Chinese pitcher. Its surface is embellished with hanakarakusa floral arabesque patterns composed of fiddlehead fern and stamped floral patterns.
