Description of works【While usually simple in style, haji ware also has decorative pieces used for ceremonial purposes】
Haji ware is a direct offspring of Yayoi pottery, whose lineage is different than that of Jomon pottery. “Haji ware” is a collective name for earthenware made in the period between the Kofun (Tumulus) period, which began in the third century CE, and the end of the Edo period in the 19th century CE.
Up to around the fourth century, haji ware came in shapes similar to Yayoi pottery, but in general, it was thinner and simpler in style. Compared to other haji ware, this jar is quite decorative, characterized by a belt-like mouth and decorations in the shapes of cords and buttons. It was used for ceremonial purposes.
