| 作品解説 | 手足をつないで回転する3人の女性像。それぞれ半身はアルミ鋳造の有機的形態、半身はステンレス板積層の幾何学的構成。具体的／抽象的、凝縮運動／拡散運動、呪術性／建築性と、発想も技法も対称的な両者。それを有機的部分では細部を大胆に省略、幾何学的部分では柔らかい曲線で波を運想させて、両者のイメージを人物内部で寄り添わせる。素材の表面にも連続感を生む処理がなされている。人物の体は少しずつひねられ、一周する間に半回転する。表が裏に、裏が表に連結するメビウスの輪の構造。時間的・空間的な無限の広がりのぐう意として機能する。加えて、人物の半身を有機的／幾何学的と別の人格が同居する格好にしたことで、無数の人物が連続する印象をつくり出している。作者は、第7回現代日本彫刻展（1977年）で、この作品と同様の複数の人物構成『ダイヤモンド構造』で秀作賞を受賞。1997年12月の除幕式では、「作家活動20年目にして、彫刻のまち・宇部に自分の作品を置くことができました。これで私も現代彫刻作家の仲間入りができ、非常にうれしい気持ちです」と語った。 In the sculpture, three female figures hold each other’s hands and feet and move in circle. The upper body of each woman is made of organically shaped cast aluminum, while the lower body consists of a geometric form made of laminated stainless-steel plates. The upper and lower bodies represent contradictory concepts and techniques like figurative / abstract, condensation / diffusion, and magical / architectural, but the contradictions are reconciled within the female figures through the bold omission of details in the organic part and the application of soft curves reminiscent of waves on the geometric part. The surface of the material is also treated to create a sense of continuity. The women's bodies are gradually twisted to complete a half turn in the entire circle. This is the “Mobius” structure, connecting the front and the reverse sides, and vice versa. It functions as an allegory of the infinite expanse of time and space. The use of the human bodies inhabited by two personalities – organic and geometric – creates an impression of countless people making an endless connection. The sculptor is the winner of Award of Excellence at the 7th Contemporary Japanese Sculpture Exhibition (1977) with “Diamond Structure”, a work similarly incorporating multiple human figures. At the unveiling ceremony in December 1997, the sculptor expressed his joy: “At last after 20 years of sculpting, I am able to install my work in Ube, the city of sculpture. I am delighted to be finally accepted as a contemporary sculptor.” |
