| 作品解説 | 宇部市民なら昔から誰でも知っている記念すべき彫刻である。常盤公園の芝生の丘の展示場で毎年出品作はいろいろ変わっても、向井良吉の「蟻の城」だけは四十数年たった今も常設されて動くことがない。というのも、作者は柳原義達、大高正人氏らとともにこの展示場をみずからブルを操って切り拓いた立役者であるからだ。62年に宇部市が「宇部」をテーマに五人の作家に模型制作を依頼、向井の「蟻の城」だけが実物大に制作され、今日までその偉容を保っている。当時は鉄錆がふいたままだったが、今は一部改造され鮮やかな塗料で表面保護されている。 Every residents of Ube grew up familiar with this monumental sculpture. While other artworks are annually replaced with new sculptures on the grassy hill, Ant Castle by Ryokichi Mukai remains the only permanent exhibition on the site for more than four decades. It is a homage to Mukai’s contribution to the exhibition site, who, together with artists Yoshitatsu Yanagihara and Masato Otaka, personally bulldozed the site for the sculpture exhibition. When five artists were commissioned to produce models under the theme of “Ube” in 1966, only Mukai’s work was selected for a full-scale production, which maintains its majestic presence till today. In the early days, genuine rust covered the artwork, but vivid color paint protects the surface today after partial modification. |
