DescriptionDuring the Shang and Zhou dynasties through the Warring States period, a type of ware which can be said as the predecessor of celadon, known as "proto celadon" developed along the southern area of the Yangtze River for a long period of time. In the Eastern Han dynasty a mature celadon in terms of production technique began to appear in northern Zhejiang Province. The impressed design covering the body was applied in the same technique as those on the contemporary hard-bodied pottery with impressed decoration. Shards bearing similar patterns have been excavated from kilns sites in Shangyu, Ningbo and Yongjia in Zhejiang Province.
