| +History | Legend has it that after his accession, Japan’s mythological first emperor Jinmu ordered the Mononobe clan’s distant ancestor Umashimaji-no-mikoto to venerate a divine sword as a deity at the imperial court. During the reign of the 10th emperor Sujin, another Mononobe clan ancestor Ikagashikō no mikoto was ordered by imperial decree to construct the main building of the present shrine and transfer the sword deity there (to “Isonokami furu no Takaniwa”) to be worshipped there, thus establishing Isonokami Shrine. |
