+HistoryHirano Shrine is thought to have been established between 794 (Enryaku 13) and 801 (Enryaku 20) after the capital had been moved to Heian-kyō. Its origins go back to the mausoleum of Takano no Niigasa, birth mother of the, 50th emperor Kanmu (r. 781-806), which he relocated from Yamato Province to a location near the imperial palace to serve as a tutelary for his mother's side of the family (the Yamato and Haji clans).
