| | 響灘（ひびきなだ）は、小倉・福岡・長州の三藩領の中間域にあって、九州各地から大坂登船や、北国廻船（北前船）の西廻海路、朝鮮通信使の通行など、重要な海上交通路でした。また、海上には、藍島（あいのしま）・六連島（むつれじま）・馬島（うましま）・白島（しらしま）・蓋井島（ふたおいじま）ほか、大小多数の島が点在し、島陰は恰好の密貿易地点となっていました。 |

The sea, aside from Aino-shima, Mutsure-jima, Uma-shima, Shira-shima, and Futaoi-jima islands, is also dotted with enormous numbers of islands large and small, and illegal trade also took place in various spots in the lees of these countless islands. |
