DescriptionBorn in Kagawa, Japan in 1968. Lives and works in Tokyo.

“Artist of the now” whose activities span filmmaker to graphic designer, VJ, writer and university professor. Dommune, a live streaming program he launched in 2010, transmits without fail every weekday night, and as well as providing extensive coverage of the subculture scene featuring up-to-the-minute topics and guests, has built up an archive serving as a superb cultural history. Ukawa was General Director of the Takamatsu Media Art Festival and a sound art judge at Ars Electronica in 2015.

"DJ JOHN CAGE & THE 1000 WORLD WIDE DJS" is an installation featuring a life-size model of John Cage DJ-ing against a 5-channel video backdrop compiled from the archives of "Dommune" live streaming program launched in 2010 by Ukawa Naohiro. Originating in the idea of a next dimension for the “commune” (D coming after C), "Dommune" is a real, physical medium that rather than having viewers who simply receive information in mind, shows videos unquestionably of the right here and now, sharing time in the present. While delivering swathes of content to viewers seeking a contemporary experience, "DJ JOHN CAGE & THE 1000 WORLD WIDE DJS" is also a spectacular work creating a hub for countless disparate cultural communities. The audio track accompanying the video footage has turned almost entirely to white noise, to the point of disqualifying it as a (copyrightable) work, and a note of irony directed toward the system may be detected in the 4’33” silence every 45 minutes, calling to mind the copyright issues surrounding John Cage’s soundless composition "4’33”".
