Description | Born in San Jose, Costa Rica in 1976. Lives and works there. Federico Herrero uses a range of materials including marker pens and spray paint to draw designs on colored backgrounds that resemble camouflage patterns. He produces these works not only on canvases, but also on walls, floors and the bodies of buses and other forms of public transport. His icons, which are inspired by images of people around him, everyday events and images that momentarily spring to mind, are drawn together on the picture plane in a way that has very little sense of depth. In "Some Aspects of the Funeral March for Mr. Climent", images of strange, comical creatures and half-man, half-beast characters created by Herrero are shown in the center, with various colors applied in layers around them and brown paint apparently trickled over the areas in between. In "The Mask of Perma", in which different-shaped masses of color and drawings resembling small animals are arranged side-by-side, turquoise color surfaces cover most of the canvas, emphasizing the contrast between these surfaces and those left uncovered. "Deconstructed Face" was created in 2004 when the artist was living in Tokyo. The characters in the work that resembles some never-before-seen creatures were inspired by the expressions on the faces of the Japanese people he saw around the city. These and other works by Herrero depict personal memories and images in the context of contrasts such as lightness and darkness, and heaviness and agility. "Psycho-Tropical Landscape" was created for “Aloha Amigo! Federico Herrero ×Kazuyuki Sekiguchi” (2012-2013), an exhibition of long-term project format held at this museum. Herrero’s stepped object, evoking images of volcanoes and the Coliseum, overflows with color. Here, people gather and music and dialogue are born. The large work becomes a stage for communication. |
