DescriptionBorn in Osaka, Japan in 1959. Lives and works there.

Taking up motifs of cacti, flowers, protozoan and the female body, Tashima’s early works were on a largescale in bright colors and bold forms. Since the beginning of the 1990s, she has shifted her style, toning down colors and decorations, sorting out images she had, and producing works in such a way as to pursue the essence of form. In the “Cornucopia” series, which is her main topic at present, she realizes artworks full of life by combining glass and ceramics, making the most of the characteristics of both materials.

The title ‘cornucopia’ means ‘harvest horn’ in Greek mythology. Indicating a horn-shaped cup full of plants and fruit, it symbolizes vitality. While "Cornucopia 00-I" retains a peaceful outlook as a whole giving its glass and ceramic form some degree of independence, in "Cornucopia 02-XII", glass and ceramic are more intricately intertwined giving a dynamic impression that it is still growing. In both pieces, while the white-glazed ceramic parts express warm texture catching light gently, the glass parts shaped by pate de verre technique (in which glass paste is fired in a plaster mold) are faintly colored pink and green letting soft light pass through. Materials with different textures appeal to each other synergistically, presenting a multi-layered organic form in which creative energy and rhythm are immanent.
