| Concept | 戦前は高村光太郎に師事、仏像研究なども続ける。ロダン、ブールデル、マイヨールと続く近代フランス彫刻に強い影響を受けた一人だが、国画会を脱退して新制作派協会を創設。戦後は平和運動に投じるかたわら「戦没学生記念像」（1950年）「無辜の民シリーズ」（1970年）などをつくった。「手を前にくむ」はブールデルの骨っぽさ、マイヨールの端正さを併せ持ったような小品で、清潔な精神がうかがえる。第1回現代日本彫刻展で「馬の首」（ブロンズ）を出品したが、宇部市には地元民間会社・大谷地所が寄贈したこの像が市立図書館の閲覧室に残されている。 Before the war, the artist studied under Kotaro Takamura while continuing his research on Buddhist statues. He was one of the sculptors who were strongly influenced by modern French sculptors like Rodin, Bourdelle, and Maillol, but eventually quitted Kokugakai to found Shinseisakuha Society. After the war, the artist produced “Memorial to Students Killed in the War” (1950) and “Innocent Citizens Series” (1970) among other works, while at the same time dedicating himself to peace movements. “Fold Her Arms” is a small work in which the boldness of Bourdelle and sophistication of Maillol are merged to present a pure spirit. The sculptor entered “Horse Head” (bronze) at the 1st Contemporary Japanese Sculpture Exhibition, but Ube City presently has this statue, a gift from Otani Estate (a local company), in the reading room of the municipal library. |
