SummaryThe familiar subjects of an everyday scene make this a typical work of the Intimist school, with its intertwining of the interior quality of the subject with the inner feelings of the artist. In the first half of the 1890s, Vuillard and his fellow Nabis artists experimented with flatly decorative paintings influenced by ukiyo-e, but here we can see how he began to bring a sense of the threedimensional, however suggestive, into his works. The soft light shines into the dark room from the window on the left, sharply illuminating the chairs, tables, and woman standing next to them. The astringent green which completely covers the wall makes the spatial relationships vague, while the sharp vermilion of the table and the gray of the woman's dress and fireplace combine with the soft brushstrokes to create a magical harmony out of the low-toned colors. The artist's inner self is linked to the depths of his subject, reverberating and resonating with those depths.
