Summary | Umehara arrived in Paris during the summer of 1908 and this work was created that year. After his return from Europe, this work was exhibited at the Umehara Ryuzaburo Oil Painting Exhibition held at the Venus Club in Kanda in 1913. Upon his arrival in Europe Umehara immediately set out on a tour of the art centers of Paris, from the Musée du Luxembourg to the Salon d'Automne, and the galleries on the city's streets and he saw the works of a great many modern painters. This is one of the works he painted early in his stay in Paris while working in Takamura Kotaro's studio, along with his Paris under Snow. Umehara said "I remember that this bluish, pearl-like color had to do with the lighting in the studio. " The right arm is drawn behind her head while the left arm is laid on the sofa arm. The body of this nude woman glows a bluish white color amidst the dark surrounding space. The brushstrokes used on the woman's form are detailed and move freely across the surface. This is one work that Takamura praised highly. |
