Summary	Segal established his reputation as a sculptor with his plaster figures made by taking direct casts from the human body using medical plaster bandages. In doing so, he established a method of creating sculptures by directly reproducing the external form of the model, breaking what had until then been considered a taboo in Western sculpture. Set against a red panel evocative of the Color Field paintings of Rothko and Newman that characterized the period, this work depicts the wife seated in an affected pose on a Victorian-style settee, while her husband stands with one hand resting on the back of her settee. At the time, they were well known as collectors of contemporary art. The work also attracted attention as Segal's first portrait sculpture. Although the outside-casting method does not reproduce every detail of the figures, the setting, poses, and props emphasize the models' social standing and individual characteristics, revealing the acuity of Segal's powers of observation.

1. Indicate the owner of the collection
Please indicate the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art as the owner of the collection. For pieces that are part of the Kimura Teizo Collection, credit “Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art (Kimura Teizo Collection)”, and for pieces from the Fujii Tatsukichi Collection, credit “Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art (Fujii Tatsukichi Collection)”.

2. Indicate any cropping or modifications
If you used a cropped version of the image, indicate that it is partial image. If you make any other modifications, please indicate that as well.

3. Get permission from third-party copyright holders
Even images that are marked as "Public Domain" or "CC0" may be copyrighted by a third party or subject to other rights. It is your sole responsibility as the user of these images to secure permission from any copyright holders. The museum will bear no responsibility for any violations resulting from image user actions.

4. Use of high-resolution images
If you would like to use high-resolution images then please contact Image usage representative.

2．Request non–public domain images

　Those who wish to use the types of images listed in (1)–(2) below must fill out a Image Usage Request after reviewing the Guidelines on the Use of Images and send it via email to our image usage representative (contact information provided below. For further information, please see "Image licensing").

*This includes images that are within the term of copyright protection and for which permission to transmit to the public has been obtained from the copyright owner, as well as images within the extent considered to be necessary (32,400 pixels or less) in the Article 47 of the Copyright Act.

(2). Images not publicly available via the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art collection search

3．Request regarding deliverables

　We ask that you provide the museum with a copy of any deliverables (e.g. printed materials) created using images from our collection so that we can keep them for reference. Please send them to our image usage representative (contact information provided below).

Biography	George Segal was born in New York. He studied at New York University and, through his teacher Baziotes, came into contact with the artists of Abstract Expressionism. He met Kaprow, the originator of “Happenings,” in the early 1950s and held his first one-man show as an Expressionist painter. In addition to painting, he experimented with plaster sculptures in the latter half of the 1950s, and at the beginning of the 1960s he encountered medical plaster bandages, using them to develop the “outside casting” method. He displayed a work molded directly from a human body in the 1962 exhibition The New Realists, which played a key role in bringing Pop Art to public attention. The following year, he was selected to participate in the São Paulo Biennial as a sculptor. From 1971 onward, while continuing to address social themes, he adopted a new casting technique that enabled him to render finer detail and broadened his expressive range by adding color to his figures.
