SummaryThis sculpture was created at the Académie Julian and is one of the works he brought back lo Japan, along with his Priest Mongaku praised by Takamura Kotaro. The Torso was not accepted for the 2nd Bunten exhibition, where he received a prize for Mongaku, because of its unfinished state. In response to a reporter who asked why there was no head, Ogiwara replied that he had created the work on the basis of glimpses stolen of a model in the next classroom whose “line from both armpits to hip he had an unquenchable admiration for.” The work on this piece was interrupted when he was fond fault with his peeping. Thus there is a sharp cut off surface at both shoulders, and Ogiwara determined that he considered this work complete as just a torso because the part of the model which attracted him, the outline of her sides, was included in the work. The sculpture also has a superb balance in the sense of mass between the mass of the chest which is pushed back and constricted contrasting with the legs stretching forward. The forceful feel of the muscles themselves also give this masterwork a sense of fresh youthfulness.
