SummaryWhile Kokoschka was in art school in Vienna he created the illustrations for his own poetic narrative book entitled Die traumenden Knaben (Dreaming Boys), and they published the first edition of the book with prints taken from those ink drawings in 1908. The set of illustrations consisted of 8 color lithographs and several woodcuts to decorate the cover and heading pages. The dedication page of this book notes that Kokoschka dedicated the book to Gustav Mahler's widow, Alma. Kokoschka drew the nude studies of Lilith, sister of his school classmate Erwin Lang, in 1907 and through the winter of the following year. In these studies, he developed an angular outline form which would characterize the work of 1907 and the following year. These drawings were influenced by the boyish figural style seen in Georges Minne's sculptures and were interrelated with Kokoschka's own artistic ideals. The drawings of Lilith were also probably influenced by the images of puberty seen in the Beethoven Friezes created by Klimt in 1902.
