SummaryThis work is filled up with approximately 180 small red sections composed of rectangles and squares made up solely of horizontal and vertical lines. Overall many of the segments are horizontally arrayed rectangles where the vertical line is emphasized more than the horizontal line. The diverse array of colors, varying slightly in tone are separated into their own specific divisions. They seem to advance and retreat, without ever reaching a focal point, as this painting mystifies viewers into a type of almost weightless experience. The geometric composition which had formed in the 1940s is here beginning to re-crystallize, and these works by Reinhardt have been dubbed "Archaic color-brick-brushwork impressionism. "The tall vertically arrayed composition is said to have been influenced by the hanging scrolls that the painter gave lectures on the history of art, particularly Asian art, at Brooklyn University after World War II.
