Summary1933, the year in which this work was made, marked the turning point at which Nicholson moved from representation to abstraction. He gave reality to his painting by placing objects such as a picture postcard, a newspaper, and cloth on the pictorial surface. This could be regarded as the final development of representation. He made collages that emphasized the planar quality of flat materials affixed to the surface, and these led to his later abstract reliefs constructed from overlapping planes. The stripes on the mug at the center of this painting are not only the mug’s pattern but also flat bands of color that become elements of the painterly surface. The face incised in lines on the left side of the picture is composed of three overlapping views: left profile, right profile, and frontal view. Noteworthy here is the “composition of overlapping planes,” which is related to collage and runs through most of Nicholson’s work.
