SummaryThis work was created in Kirchner's Berlin studio. The composition is made up fundamentally of straight lines and circles, and the circle plays a particularly dominant role in the painting. For about six monthes starting in the autumn of 1910 Kirchner sought out non-European forms of instiration for his arts, turning to books in the library, and in particular John Griffith's book which led him to the wall paintings Ajanta. The formative techniques based on the circle found in Ajanta paintings can also be seen in this still-life painting. If we were to interpret the meaning of this work, we could see this painting as the antagonistic relationship between the primitive and the natural vs. the modern and the man-made. The wallhanging in the background shows frolicking nude man and woman in an Oceanic or African style. The apples link this pair to Adam and Eve. Kirchner himself carved this fruit bowl in the style of primitive carvings. On the other hand, the glasses and lamp are modern, man-made objects. This work was displayed in the 1937 exhibition of "Degenerate Art."
