Summary | This painting is from Picasso's Blue Period when he concentrated on the poor and downtrodden as subjects. The dominant tone is blue, and a strong poetic feeling, both sentimental and melancholy, floats over the picture. This expressionistic symbolism is deeply rooted in Picasso's own reactions to death and suffering during this period. In his art he was able to raise his personal feelings to a universal level. This work is one of a series of female figures painted in Barcelona wearing scarves or shawls. The depersonalized expression and fearful appearance of the model give a religious aspect to this painting, taking it beyond the realm of private feeling, and arousing a sense of awe in the viewer. It is possible to recognize here the tradition of Spanish religious art, particularly the Romanesque and Gothic art of Catalonia. |
