Summary	The Crust of the Earth — Latent Form are collaborated works in which Noda has drawn his sinuous lines and geometric designs on the smooth surfaces of Okamoto's sculpture. It is extremely rare to find a sculptor and painter creating a collaborated work, but it comes after Noda's experiments with the support media for his paintings and his long-standing desire to paint his works on the earth itself. Noda was the one who conceived of the idea of using a sculpture as his ground material and even though there are differences between painting and sculpture, he conveyed this idea to Okamoto, a contemporary who had also experimented with escaping from Minimalism. Okamoto then came up with some forms that would suit the experiment and they began making joint works. This work is a result of the collaboration, and without losing the distinctive qualities of the two different artists, it creates a highly finished work that fuses painting with sculpture, in some ways like that of a cave wall painting.

OKAMOTO Atsuo

Birth	1951
Biography	Okamoto was born in Hiroshima prefecture. Received his Masters degree in sculpture from Tama Art University in 1976. He quickly began participating in sculpture symposia held both in Japan and overseas, and also continued working on displaying sculptures in outdoor sculpture exhibitions. In 1989 received the Asakura Fumio Prize, and in 1996 received the Nakahara Teijiro Prize. Today he is recognized world-wide as one of Japan's major sculptors in stone. During the first half of the 1980s he created hollows in stone blocks, and then used lights to shine into the interior through narrow gaps in the surface of the stone. These tricky sculptures then were replaced in the latter half of the 1980s by roughly planed granite broken into small fragments which were then reconstructed the fragments so that the interior was hollow in a series entitled Memory Cubage. These richly imaginative works broke new ground in the realm of stone sculpture.

NODA Hiroji

Biography	Noda was born in Wakayama prefecture. Graduated from the oil painting course, department of painting of Tama Art University in 1976. The realms of Minimalism and Conceptual Art dominated the art world when he debuted as a painter during the 1970s, a time when painting was a particularly fraught medium. He realized that he could not avoid the process of reconsidering the potentials to be found in painting. He investigated what actually was established by a painting, and set himself the task of exploring these questions through the 1970s through 1980s. His group of relief sculptures which placed colored paper, wood, cloth and other elements inside a box-like wooden frame, his series of works in which support media with protrusions and depressions were wrapped in canvas and then painted, and the series of works in which folded pieces of canvas were arranged in geometric images on a piece of stretched canvas were the results of these experiments. These and other experiments took Noda into the 1990s when he took the results of these experiments and from them created paintings with beautiful colors and richly powerful images. Noda stands as one of the major two dimensional artists of today.
