SummaryColor creates a painting's own unique space and this issue was one of the major questions pursued by painters in the 20th century. From the middle of the 1950s, Louis began to use a technique known as staining in his pursuit of this issue. The acrylic pigments were allowed to run on the unprimed canvas, and as they permeated the canvas the pigments themselves took on their own thickness and feel. The purity of color achieved with this method is visually very appealing. The first series in this technique, the Veil (1954, 1957-59), had pigments flowing like a waterfall on the canvas, creating a magnificent presence which pressed out upon the viewer in front of the canvas. On the other hand, the Unfurled series (1960-61), as seen here, leaves the majority of the canvas untouched, creating a bright, unfettered space.
